The Leaflet Mountain Mahogany Community School Newsletter “Where deeply nurtured children become natural learners for life!” August, 2010 Issue No. 1 ________________________________________ Welcome Back Night! Please join us for the 2nd annual Welcome Back Night Celebration at Mountain Mahogany Community School. This is an opportunity for families, new and returning, to meet, connect, eat, learn about specific groups on campus, and have fun together. This is a school-wide Potluck, so please bring something to share with others, as well as utensils, plates, cups and napkins for your family. Safe Zone! A * Safe Zone is a place where you can feel free to talk about being lesbian, gay, bisexual, or transgendered without fear of criticism or hatred. It is a place where you can feel not only supported, but affirmed. It is a place where you are not only accepted, but valued. Look for the Safe Zone sign. People displaying a specific sign have completed a Safe Zone training and have agreed to be positive, supportive, and affirming to students, staff, and faculty who wish to talk about being gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgendered. In a Safe Zone, you are free to be yourself. The Mountain Mahogany Community School faculty and staff completed a training on May 11, 2010. We will be designating a specific Safe Zone in the weeks to come. If you would like to attend the Intercultural Education Committee meeting to learn more about this issue and find out what else this committee is doing, please join them on Wednesday, September 1st @ 3:30 in the 1st grade classroom. . Drop-off/ Pick-up traffic Thank you for your help and patience with our traffic issues. Also, the emails regarding suggestions to help alleviate the traffic concerns were very helpful and that information was given to the facilities committee who will continue to work on this issue. We have seen a decrease in the traffic flow in the mornings and in the afternoons due to the parent carpools, earlier arrival times in the morning, and the after school program and clubs. However, on Fridays the afterschool clubs are not in session and it can be a bit congested at that time.
We still need help with the traffic flow especially after school. Parents, parking is available on the north end of the campus. The radio station in front of our school, has graciously offered us their parking spots as well. To help with the traffic flow in during drop off and pick up times, we need your help with the following: Pull all the up to an available spot Stay in line if you are not parking Keep kids with you after you have received them Once again parents, thank you for your assistance and support with our traffic situation! Mountain Mahogany Community School Vision and Core Goals . The Mountain Mahogany Community School Vision statement reads, “Mountain Mahogany Community School envisions a joyous learning world in which public education and profound nurturing are synonymous.” We are striving to bring this vision alive in the classrooms through these eight core goals: Joy and Security, Universal Empathy, School Life as Real Life, Differentiated Instruction and Learning, Creative Thinking, and Environmental Awareness, Media Literacy and Ongoing School Development. Each month we will feature one of the core goals in the Leaflet and look at how your student may be experiencing it in his/her classroom. Friends of Mountain Mahogany (FOMM) Friends of Mountain Mahogany (FOMM) would like to welcome all of our families for another great year of learning and community building. All parents and guardians of students at MMCS are members of FOMM, an independent non-profit, which raises funds to support our school. We will be scheduling several campus wide meetings throughout the school year, as well as committee meetings, and will occasionally have a table out front during drop off and/or pick up to sell scrip and provide information about fundraising. We will be having a FOMM board meeting followed by a fundraising committee meeting on September 9th. Please join us if you have fundraising ideas or are interested in what FOMM is about. You can also contact Amber Leinhos, FOMM president, for more information, at 897-2642 or

. Our first fundraiser of the year will be September 15-19, during the New Mexico State Fair. One of our parents works for Bowlin Travel Centers, which is across the street from the main entrance. They offer their parking lot to non-profit groups for fundraisers during the fair. We get to keep all the money raised, and will need volunteers to help direct traffic and collect parking fees. If you are interested in helping please contact Gina Paquet at 350-5352 or

, or sign up at the FOMM table. We will have a table at the welcome night, September 2nd, where you can also purchase Scrip. We would like to thank those families who have been participating in our ongoing fundraising opportunities, and encourage others to join us. Did you know that we have several options for raising funds for the school at places you probably already shop? Smith’s Grocery Store gives back a portion of their profits to schools that participate in their Earn and Learn Program. All you have to do is register your Smith’s reward card every year and your purchases will count towards this program (we received $411 last year, up from $268 in 08-09). Those of you that registered your Smith's reward card last year will need to re-register it before the end of September. FOMM also sells scrip for both La Montanita Co-op and Sunflower Market. The school receives a percentage for every dollar you spend. During the 2009-2010 school year we raised ~$3000 with 25 families buying co-op scrip ($2184 in 08-09 with 20 families), and $200 with 12 families buying Sunflower scrip ($74 in 08-09 with 6 families). Just think how much we could raise if all our families that shop at those stores used scrip and registered their Smith's card! Thank you for your support of our school! |
